As Aotearoa adjusts to the latest efforts to stop the spread of Covid-19, it can be hard to stay on top of all the new information. To help, we’ve pulled together advice, links and resources for our Māori and Pasifika communities and the trades industry.

Alert Level 4

Auckland is currently in Alert level 4 to contain the latest community outbreak. Once again, we need to all pull together and support one another.

It’s important we look after ourselves and our aiga. We’ve done this before, we can do it again. Visit the Ministry for Pacific People’s website for translated information on Covid-19.

Everyone must now stay at home. This means:

  • You can only leave your home to shop for groceries, access necessary healthcare, get a COVID-19 test, exercise in your local area or go to work if you are working in an Alert Level 4 service and cannot work from home.
  • Only make physical contact with those in your household bubble.

Wear a face covering

At Alert Level 4, you must stay home other than for essential personal movement.

  • We encourage you to wear a face covering and keep 2 metres distance from others when leaving your home. Especially if it is difficult to maintain physical distance from others.
  • You legally must wear a face covering if you are a customer or an employee involving customer contact at a business or service operating at Alert Level 4.

Vaccinations at Alert Level 4

It is important that our community continues to get vaccinated to help protect us from COVID-19. The COVID-19 vaccination programme continues. If you haven’t already we encourage you to book your vaccine here.

Vaccination sites will be operating under Alert Level 4 conditions. Physical distancing requirements at the sites means there might be fewer people vaccinated.

MPTT during Alert Level 4

Like everyone else, we’re adjusting how we work to help stop the spread of Covid-19. But these changes won’t stop our programme, or your MPTT scholarship. Instead, we’ll be delivering some of our services in a different way.

  • We’re still here to help you throughout all the Covid-19 alert levels, and you can contact us as normal. As always, we’re here if you need support or have any questions.
  • In-person MPTT events will be postponed until we are able to hold them safely. This includes the Women in Trades Conference, our Power Up Wananga, Awhi sessions, ‘Work Readiness Wananga’ or Trades Induction visits. We will be reviewing this as the government updates its restrictions around events. 
  • The Learner Support Fund and Tools Kete support is still available – just contact our navigators or us at the Project Management Office:

Your physical health

The most important way to keep yourself and your whānau safe during the Covid-19 pandemic is to keep up-to-date with the Government’s announcements, follow their guidelines, and know the signs and symptoms of Covid-19. 

If you have any cold or flu symptoms at all, stay home and call Healthline (0800 358 5453) or your doctor to organise a free test for Covid-19. Even if you think it’s just a cold, it’s vital to get tested quickly to make sure. This will help keep your whānau, friends and community safe.

Even if you feel well, act as if you have Covid-19 when you’re out and about, to help stop the spread of the virus. That means it’s important to wash your hands regularly and keep your physical distance from others in public – especially people you don’t know because it’s harder for health officials to track them down later if you discover you have the virus. 

You should also keep a record of where you’ve been and who you’ve spent time with, so it’s quick and easy for everyone to get tested if needed. You can download the government’s NZ Covid Tracer app to help you keep track. Turn Bluetooth on.

Your mental health

It’s normal to feel stressed or unsettled right now. It’s a difficult time for many Kiwis, and you’re not alone. Here are some ideas to help you feel more relaxed:

  • Talk to someone if you’re feeling stressed or anxious. Remember, help is available at every alert level. Free call or text 1737 any time for support from a trained counsellor. You can also visit the Mental Health Organisation website or contact MATES in Construction for support.
  • Spend time with your friends and family. While there are still health guidelines we all need to follow, that doesn’t stop you from connecting with your loved ones.
  • Get outside at least once a day, and try to get some exercise every day. Moving your body is great for your physical health, but also helps you stay mentally healthy.
  • Mentemia is an app developed by All Blacks legend and mental health champion Sir John Kirwan. It lets you monitor, manage and improve your mental health, and is available free to all New Zealanders until the end of September.
  • Staying on Track is a free guide to support your wellbeing during Covid-19 and beyond. You’ll learn how to look after your worry and choose behaviours that will help you and your whānau stay on track. It’s completely free and available to all New Zealanders – all you need is internet access and a desktop or mobile device.
  • Wellbeing resources can be ordered through the Mental Health Foundation shop here, free of charge.

Your money

Covid-19 has caused a lot of disruption, including to working life. If you’ve had to stay home for health reasons, you might be able to get financial support from the government. Check out what you could get with the Covid-19 Financial Support Tool.
